How to Read Guitar Chord Diagrams

Each diagram shows a section of the guitar fretboard. Vertical lines represent the six strings (low E on the left, high E on the right). Horizontal lines represent frets. The thick bar at the top is the nut (open position).

  • Black dots show where to place your fingers
  • O above a string means play it open (unfretted)
  • × above a string means don't play that string
  • A number to the left indicates a position shift (barre chord)

Essential Guitar Chords for Beginners

Start with these open chords: C, G, D, E, Em, Am, A, and Dm. These eight chords let you play thousands of songs. Once comfortable, add F (your first barre chord), Bm, and seventh chords to expand your repertoire.
